I didn't tell you when I was here last week - I am very much at the center of the effort to combat notions of evolutionary randomness. In other words, the debate regarding Intelligent Design is something I manage the Republican side of across the country. So activists around the country know to send me dossiers on figures who are capable of representing the case as effectively as possible.

I gather them and then I help to set up those debates. And I also gather position papers.

This past week we had set up for New York City the ultimate debate. A major scholar, now an emeritus professor, who all his life had been a major figure in the field of evolutionary biology, apparently had a late reconsideration of all of his work. And this came to my attention. He in fact wrote a position paper in which he argued that with all that he knew, Intelligent Design was still a credible way of construing human origins.

I set him up. And in this debate he didn't make reference to one scientific concept. He responded to an evolutionary biologist who believes in the literal truth of Darwin, et al., by citing biblical verses. Only biblical verses.

We're laughed out of the place. I mean we're humiliated. It was not a debate. It was a slaughter. But how did that happen?

So I go back home. I'm devastated. I don't even talk to the man. I just rush out. I feel some kind of - something treasonous, something's up. I'm thinking about Nathan. I go home. I open up my database. I hook onto this letter and the CV and I'm looking for the position paper. He had sent me a position paper.

I couldn't find the position paper. But I did find his curriculum vitae. I open it up. His credentials were completely different. He was a retired missionary. That's it.
