[X] Helen - Session#54 Transcript

Dr. Fletcher

(writing notes)

Helen has convinced herself that the ideas of Freud are the only satisfying explanations for her experience. I disagree with her, but she continues holding onto antiquated ideas about female sexuality.

Helen

So I've been having this dream recently in which I'm a little girl again and I'm in my house - the little house that we used to live in. And the house is burning down. I'm there with my dad, and he's trying to get us out of the house.

But I keep saying, "No, I need to get the new showerhead. I need to get the showerhead out of the house." And he's saying, "No, we have to get out of here so that we can save our lives."

It's very troubling. And when I wake up, I can't breathe. I have serious shortness of breath.

Dr. Fletcher

(writing notes)

One of Freud's famous patients, Dora, had a dream about a fire in her house and her wanting to drag her father to rescue her jewelry box. Dora had an associated problem of shortness of breath, which Freud tried to cure her of.

Helen

A couple days ago I was at this guy's house and we were watching a movie. And in the movie, a house was on fire - this house was burning down. And I started - I couldn't breathe.

Then this guy saw that I was having so much trouble breathing - and I'm not asthmatic. But I think that he misinterpreted my shortness of breath for heavy breathing.

I think he thought that I was excited. So we started fooling around. And then we had sex. Which really got my mind off of this dream.
